Yogurt Mama isn’t the only frozen yogurt shop in Kailua Town, but it is certainly one of the more memorable ones. Located on Oneawa Street, “YoMama”—as I have come to affectionately term the shop—is located right next to G Barber Shop across from Zippy’s. Even if you were unfamiliar with the area, it would be hard for you to miss since the YoMama sign is iconic with its bright neon colored lettering and the caricature of this elusive Yogurt Mama.
Depending on which entrance you take (they have two with one positioned near the sidewalk below the shop’s sign and another on the side closest to the barber shop next door), you can either find yourself right near the dry toppings bar or near the various seating available. For the sake of this review, I’ll start from the side entrance.
When you first walk in, you’ll be greeted by one of the many employees behind the register along with the various dry toppings they have available. If you continue to your left, you will come across the cups YoMama has available for you to use in order to start your frozen yogurt creation. They currently have three different sizes: regular/medium (yellow cup), large (teal cup), and a clear cup for those who want their froyo on the go. Once you’ve decided on which size you’d like, you can choose from the different flavors displayed of frozen yogurt. While they have their regular flavors such as Tart, Strawberry, Mango, Pinaepple Dole Whip, etc., they also have seasonal flavors such as Acai, Lychee, Pumpkin, and much more. The frozen yogurt can also be combined if they are placed in the same dispenser cubicle (i.e.
Strawberry and Mango are usually always in the same dispenser area, so if you want both, you can choose to pull the middle lever in order to combine the two). Once you’re finished with the frozen yogurt flavors, you can then choose from a variety of toppings that is split into a dry toppings bar and a sauce/cold toppings bar.
The dry toppings bar is located on your left (this will be the first thing you walk into when you enter from the side entrance) and the sauce/cold toppings is on your right. The dry toppings consist of anything from hard candies, nuts, gummies, yogurt covered raisins, and basically any kind of topping that doesn’t need to be refrigerated. In contrast, the sauce/cold toppings bar contains anything from jellies, popping jellies, fruits, mocha and cheesecake bites, as well as a wide assortment of sauces such
as marshmallow, lilikoi, caramel, sweetened condensed milk, honey, etc. Do keep in mind that your final cost is based on weight, so the toppings and amount of frozen yogurt you place in your cup should be considered.
Once you’ve finished your frozen yogurt creation, you will then take your cup to the cashier’s located to the right of the sauce/cold toppings bar where they will have you place your yogurt on their scale to base your total costs based on weight. Once they’ve weighed it, they will alert you to the price and you can either pay in cash or card. At the end of the transaction, they will give you a spoon, and you can grab some napkins by the scale.
For those who decide to eat at Yogurt Mama instead of taking their yogurt home or to go, there are a few different options for you to choose from in terms of seating. They have table booths located at the fear end of the shop with round tables and neon-colored hourglass seats as well as diner-like tables for you to pick from. In addition, they also have two TVs for people to watch from while eating their frozen yogurt and usually Disney movies are played.
Overall, YoMama is definitely a place worth visiting because there’s something comforting and attractive about the brightly colored interior and nostalgic sweet confections. Not to mention that depending on the time of day you visit, the shop is either full to capacity or empty enough for you to relax. And the frozen yogurt and toppings is always a refreshing treat.
