Other Realms ltd.
1130 N Nimitz Hwy C-140, Honolulu, HI 96817
If you’ve ever heard of Other Realms, it is most likely through one of their events that they’ve hosted in previous years. For example, this year they were able to host a Stan Lee signing since he was out and about in Honolulu for a few days. However, they’re also known for hosting weekly and monthly gaming tournaments for board games such as The Settlers of Catan, Dungeons and Dragons, etc. Formerly located in Ward Warehouse, they are now situated on Nimitz with a larger location and better parking options. Now, the comic book store not only boasts a variety of collections from old school comics to newer, contemporary pieces, but also has items such as indie board games, collectibles, posters, and so much more.
I was first introduced to Other Realms by my fiancé-then-boyfriend and his roommate Wills Dragon (don’t ask) when, one Saturday morning, Wills Dragon invited us to play board games. While the idea of playing board games on a beautiful Saturday morning didn’t seem appealing, we went anyway to see what was so intriguing about these games. This was back when Other Realms was still at Ward and they had their own gaming room in a separate wing across from their store. And though it wasn’t something I had anticipated participating in, it was something that was quite enjoyable and I am darned proud to say I actually won a few round of DC Comics Deck-Building Game where in a series of rounds you collected cards in hopes to defeat your partner.
Other Realms at Nimitz still holds the appeal of its former location but with a refreshing interior and a brand new side room that allows customers to put their new board games to the test or leisurely hang about to read the new comic they purchased. Not to mention that their store is a lot larger than their Ward location and has more goodies than before with games on one side and comics on the other allowing customers to easily navigate their store without having to fret.
If it’s your first time visiting Other Realms, I’d definitely suggest just browsing around because while your initial visit may seem intimidating due to the expanse of their collection of items or perhaps the knowledge of some of their more experienced customers, it’s a place that holds a lot of unique experiences and trinkets that you may not otherwise have known or even cared to try had you not visited. I know for me, I picked up a few cat-related indie games that I’ve never heard of but have been enjoying immensely as well as enjoying old classics such as Coup and Settlers of Catan with friends and family. And now that it’s summer, there’s even more reason for you to visit Other Realms to see what games you can play!
