Brew'd

3441 Waialae Avenue Suite A, Honolulu, HI 96816

Hawai’i beer aficionados will be thrilled to hear that the owner of Brew’d is none other than Troy Terorotua, owner of well known sister bar Real a Gastropub in Ward. Brew’d is located in the heart of Kaimuki on Waialae Avenue neighboring restaurant Town and up and coming restaurant Mud Hen Water. The pub is known for a wide selection of brews from around the world and normally has specials and weekly rotating beers (24) on tap. The exterior of the bar is well lit and the ambiance is very welcoming to guests. You can tell that this bar will be a wonderful new experience and be different from typical bars. Inside there are friendly staff greeting patrons at the door and a great hand drawn chalk mural on the wall. Behind the bar is a vast menu of the beer on tap for the day. The menu is tapa (appetizer) style for food and the booklet for drinks is thickly filled with numerous pages of beers categorized appropriately. There is seating at the bar and tables lining the wall giving it a cozy atmosphere good for small groups but may be difficult for groups exceeding 4 people. For those that are newer to beer, there is an option to order flights which is a sampler of 4 beers of your choice from the tap that night with prices ranging from $4-$6 depending on if the brew is domestic or imported. The flights that I was able to try this night were the Goose Island 312 Wheat Ale, Goose Island IPA, Heretic Chocolate Hazelnut Porter, and the Maui Brewing Pau Hana Pilsner.  The Goose Island 312 Wheat Ale was a mild wheat beer, not as hoppy as other wheat beers. There is a faint sweetness to the taste that lingers and is overall an easy to drink beer. The Goose Island IPA was citrusy and had hints of orange. It did not stand out from the crowd of many other IPA’s and was an average pale ale. The Heretic Chocolate Hazelnut Porter was a new type of beer to me. It was much alike to a dessert in a glass. It was full of chocolate and nutty tastes with some caramel as well. It is a drink to try for those exploring new brews. The Maui Pau Hana Pilsner is similar to many mainstream beers in how light it is. It is slightly bitter with a bite to it but is very easy to consume. Finally I tried the Blood, Zweet & Tranen to balance out the flights with a heavier dark beer. This beer may not appeal to those that are fond of light or pale ales. This beer is a smoked beer that contains a roasty/malty flavor with a distinct smoky flavor that lingers.  Anyone who is fond of a robust darker beer should give this one a try at least once. Brew’d is a must visit if you are a resident of Kaimuki as it is a valuable new piece of the nightlife.
